ITALY SINKS EUROPE

Summary of AIDWATCH 2011 Report

Thursday, May 19th 2011

Beyond the disappointing performance in 2010, if we look at 2015 we can foresee that European Official Development Assistance will grow far more slowly than what would be necessary to reach the target of 0.7% of GDP scheduled for 2015. Considering the projections and the recent trend, the overall reduction will increase every year until 2015. According to this analysis, the amount of aid compared to the GDP in 2015 (the year identified to fulfill the Millennium Development Goals) will only reach as low as 0.45%. Italy is one of the primary countries responsible for such a gap (it is about to further significantly reduce its minimal level of ODA  to an embarrassing 0.09% in 2015);  followed by France and Germany (who will fulfill only 60% of their commitments by 2015); Austria ( will keep its modest level of ODA/GDP around 0.32%). In conclusion, it is likely that  Denmark, one of the best performers so far will freeze its nominal assistance and not reach the national objective of 0.8% in the next five years.
